  • March 3, Front Country Trails Task Force, sponsored by the US Forest Service, and SB City and County. This public meeting will consider UTAP trail assessment results, recent trail maintenance, and priorities for 2010.   • March 4, Education Committee Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and Bici Centro. Takes place the first Thursday of each month. The Education Committee coordinates League Certified Instructors and other volunteers for Safe Routes to School activities, adult mechanics classes, street skills classes, youth mechanics, and more.   • March 6, Island View Criterium, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. Returning to the South Coast for the third year, this day of events includes collegiate and public criteriums. Details at UCSB Cycling.
  • March 7, UCSB Road Race, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. This 33, 43 or 65-mile course is for collegiates only, in Sisquoc. Details at UCSB Cycling.
  • March 7-12, Vines to Coast Cycling Package, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Spend 3 nights in Solvang, then 2 nights in Santa Barbara with cycling every day 20-35 miles, or more if you wish. Gourmet lunches, fine dining, deluxe accommodations, vehicle support, and local wines. Details here.
  • March 9, Measuring the Real Cost of Parking and Alternative Transportation, sponsored by UCSB. This is a free "webinar" produced by Academic Impressions. Participants will learn how to quantify the true costs of parking to allow the determination of the right mix of transportation options.   • March 9, Particia Starr Book Signing, sponsored by Borders Books. Santa Barbara resident Patricia Starr has just published "Angel on my Handlebar" about her 2004 cross-country bike ride at the age of 67. She bicycled 3600 miles.   • March 13, Solvang Century, sponsored by SCOR. The West's big seasonal kickoff ride. Choose 100 or 50-mile rides starting from Solvang. Raffle, Cycling Expo barbecue, and thousands of cyclists.   • March 15-21, Solvang Spring Tour, sponsored by Planet Ultra. Seven days of rides out of Solvang, each ride 30-110 miles long, returning to Solvang each night. Chose each day from a shorter or longer ride. Unique back roads that other organized tours miss. Unsupported, but suggested rest and meal stops are offered along the way. Elevation gains vary from 1500-5000 feet. Details at www.planetultra.com.
  • March 18, Plan Santa Barbara Open House, sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. This will be an opportunity for the public to view and comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Report on Santa Barbara's proposed General Plan update that has been under consideration since 2007.   • March 18 and 20, Street Skills for Cyclists Class, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Learn how to cope better with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid accidents, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including on-road bicycling on Saturday.   • March 20, LA Bike Summit, sponsored by the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute. A day of free presentations and workshops on all aspects of urban bicyling. The emphasis is on Los Angeles, but nearly all applies elsewhere. 10:30 AM-5:00 PM at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, 400 West Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles. Details and registration online here.
  • March 21, Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Triathlon, sponsored by the UCSB Triathlon Team. This early season sprint distance race is ideal for beginners and veterans alike. The triathlon includes a 16-mile bike leg. Group starts between 8:00-8:30 AM from Campus Point. Pre-registration required. Details at www.ucsbtriathlon.org.
  • March 21-26, Central Coast Bike Tour, sponsored by Undiscovered Country Tours. This six-day tour is between Paso Robles and Santa Barbara, offering lots of great rides, great restaurants, and inviting inns.   • March 21-March 27, Bicycle Tour of Solvang Wine Country, sponsored by Cycling Escapes. This 5-day tour includes 372 miles of challenging rides out of Solvang, encompassing 23,000 feet of climbing.   • March 26-28, Solvang Getaway Weekend Bike Tour, sponsored by Undiscovered Country Tours. Enjoy the rolling countryside of the Santa Ynez Valley. Three days of riding 40-75 miles each day, two nights lodging, most meals, guides, van support. Details at www.udctours.com.
  • March 27, Solvang Double Century, sponsored by Planet Ultra. A whole 193 miles from Solvang to Morro Bay and back. Riders must be pre-registered; staggered starts between 5:00 and 7:30 AM, depending on your estimated total time. Rest stops along the way, sag support. Limited to 550 cyclists.   • March 27, Particia Starr Book Signing, sponsored by The Bookstore.   • April 17-18, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. It runs from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on April 17th, and 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM on April 18th at Alameda Park. We are offering our community a booth, bike parking, and free bike check-ups. Renowned world cycling tourist, actor, writer, Adventure Cyclist columnist, and public radio contributor, Willie will lead us through his life of cycling adventures.
