September 2010

  • September 1, Front Country Trails Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force Meeting, sponsored by SB City, County and the Forest Service. They will consider funding for management and maintenance of the front country trails, and a trail improvement permit checklist.   • September 2, Bike Moves, unsponsored ride. Join Santa Barbara's First Thursday events with an easygoing ride that obeys traffic laws. Meet at the De la Guerra Plaza at 7:30 PM, Santa Barbara. Read about it here.
  • September 7, Bicycle Coalition General Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Meeting the first Tuesday of the month, 12:00 noon at the Granada Garage 2nd floor conference room.   • September 9, Get Your Bike Ready To Ride, sponsored by Bici Centro. In this clinic, you will learn all the important aspects of basic and responsible bike maintenance: fixing flats, locking up, basic adjustment and keeping your bike clean. Cost is $20, from 7:30-9:00 PM, Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Register online here.
  • September 11, Montecito Trails Foundation BBQ, sponsored by Montecito Trails Foundation. This event celebrates 46 years of Montecito trail work. Rides and hikes start at 9:00 AM, auction and lunch start at noon. Live music. All invited. Read more here.
  • September 11, Education Committee Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and Bici Centro. The Education Committee coordinates League Certified Instructors and other volunteers for Safe Routes to School activities, adult mechanics classes, street skills classes, youth mechanics, and more. This will be an evening pot-luck social meeting at Christine Bourgeois's house, 6:30 PM, 732 Calle Alella, Santa Barbara. Let her know what you might bring, email her at cbarreb@gmail.com.
  • September 12, Ducky Triathlon, sponsored by 3lete. This triathlon takes place at UCSB's Campus Point. It includes a 6-mile cycling leg that takes place on Los Carneros, Hollister and Fairview roads. Details here.
  • September 12-17, Vines to Coast Cycling Package, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Spend 3 nights in Solvang, then 2 nights in Santa Barbara with cycling every day 20-35 miles, or more if you wish.   • September 16, Cycling Rights and Responsibilities Clinic, sponsored by Bici Centro. Build the confidence to ride anywhere you want. Learn your legal rights and responsibilities on the road.   • September 18, Bicycle Film Festival, sponsored by Cranky's Bikes. This is the Tenth Annual Bicycle Film Festival that is being shown at 38 cities around the world, coming to Santa Barbara for the first time. At Marjorie Luke Theater, Santa Barbara Junior High School, 721 East Cota Street, Santa Barbara. Five shows Saturday, starting every two hours from 1:00 PM. Read about the Festival here.
  • September 18, Bike Handling Skills Clinic, sponsored by Bici Centro. Learn good bike handling skills to becoming a safer, more confident cyclist. On a parking lot, you will learn a number of skills to have a better control of your bike. Cost is $20. From 10:00 AM-12:00 noon, Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara.   • September 19-24, Morro Bay to Santa Barbara Cycling Tour, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Spend two nights in Morro Bay, two in Santa Ynez, and one in Santa Barbara with guided cycling every day 15-35 miles, or more if you wish.   • September 21, Safe Routes to School Task Force Meeting, sponsored by COAST. The meeting will consider efforts to increase student safety for biking and walking near schools.   • September 25, Annual Barbeque, sponsored by the Montecito Trails Foundation. Hikes and rides begin at 10:00 AM, followed by BBQ lunch, entertainment, dancing, and a silent auction from 12:00-3:00 PM. Funds will help maintain over 200 miles of trails. Details here.
  • September 25, Cycling Group Ride around Santa Barbara, sponsored by Bici Centro. You will practice your knowledge and show a full understanding of vehicular cycling during a managed group ride. It costs $20, runs 10:00 AM-12:00 noon, and starts from Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Details and online registration here.
  • September 25, Gourmet Challenge, sponored by Jim Sobell. This group of charity rides and runs out of Santa Ynez will benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Choose from 62-mile or 31-mile rides, or 5K or 10K walk/runs. Includes rest stops, sag support, and a gourmet lunch with live music at the finish.   • September 26, Carpinteria Triathlon, sponsored by the City of Carpinteria. Choose from the Olympic Course with a 40K bike ride, or the Sprint Course with a 15K bike leg. Relay teams can compete in the Olympic Course. Limited to 900 participants. Bike in mountain foothills through agricultural lands. Start and finish at Carpinteria State Beach.   • September 28, Santa Barbara Car Free Meeting, sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others. The project promotes car-free travel, has a website www.santabarbaracarfree.org, hosts programs and has developed a free map.   • October 10, People Powered Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This 30th annual ride tours the scenic Santa Barbara County wine country and surrounding hills. The start/finish is at Hans Christian Andersen Park in Solvang. Bicycling magazine rated the People Powered Ride one of the top three centuries in the nation for several years in a row. Choice of 100, 60 and 30-mile rides. Cost is $50. Register online here.
  • October 16, Ride on the Wild Side, sponsored by the Environmental Defense Center. Ride at your own pace or along with a knowledgeable guide and visit some of the local landscapes that EDC has fought to preserve. With 3 rides to choose from, 10 to 39 miles long, this event is suitable for families, casual riders, and serious cyclists. All routes will start/finish at the Environmental Defense Center, 906 Garden Street, Santa Barbara. Cost $20-$45. The rides will be followed with food, beverages, a raffle, and live music.   • October 16, Alpha Bike Ride, sponsored by the Alpha Resource Center. Ride 40 scenic miles around Goleta and Santa Barbara. Start/finish at Girsh Park, 7068 Phelps Road, Goleta, at 7:00 AM. Your $60 donation buys an event jersey, rest stop, and raffle ticket. Info here.
  • October 16, Solvang Autumn Double Century, sponsored by Planet Ultra. Challenge yourself with 201 miles and 10,300 feet of climbing starting in Solvang. A spectacular 200 mile route in Southern California's most scenic and most popular cycling region. Details here.
  • October 17-22, Bicycle Tour of Solvang Wine Country, sponsored by Cycling Escapes. Each day has a challenging ride, totaling 409 miles over six days, with 26,000 feet of climbing. Base hotel is in Solvang, with dining at various restaurants. Shuttle service from Santa Barbara airport. Information here.
  • October 23, Santa Barbara Century, sponsored by Kalon Kelley. Riders of the Century or the Metric Century ride will experience a beautiful venue of beaches and mountains in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria and Goleta. The Metric Century is 62 miles with 3800 feet of climbing, while the Century ride is 100 miles with 9600 feet of climbing. Rides start 7:00-9:00 AM. Half of the profits will benefit our Bici Centro program. Cost is $65. Details and registration here.
  • October 23, Kinetic Sculpture Race, numerous sponsors. This fun race with human-pedaled vehicles is pure joy. The hand-constructed "sculptures" have to successfully navigate roads, sand, mud and water. Ventura harbor, 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. Details here.
  • October 23-24, 24 Hours of Halloween, sponsored by Stump Grinder Dirt Club. More than a race, it's costumes, treats, pumplin carving, movies, live music, food and more. Race runs noon on Saturday to noon on Sunday. Loop is 10.5 miles with one steep descent. Details here.
  • October 24-31, Classic Climbs of Santa Barbara, sponsored by Trek Travel. Ride options 15-60 miles each day with climbs averaging 2900 feet. Rides on Figueroa Mountain and Casitas Pass are included. Three nights in Santa Ynez, then another three in Santa Barbara. Challenge yourself by day and pamper yourself at nigh. This is either a one-day ride in Santa Barbara on October 30, or a three-day tour starting in Newbury Park, including two nights in Santa Barbara, then ending in Point Mugu State Park. Benefits the YSC Young Survival Coalition nonprofit dedicated to young women affected by breast cancer. Details at www.ysctourdepink.org.
