January 2008

  • January 1, SGDC New Years Biking, sponsored by the Stump Grinder Drit Club. Start our 2008 with a day of cross country and downhill riding at your own pace.   • January 3, Plan Santa Barbara meeting, sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. This is a special meeting of the Planning Commission to review the Plan Santa Barbara in terms of review process, time line, and the summary of public input.   • January 17, ATOC Movie NIght, sponsored by the Amgen Tour of California Santa Barbara Local Organizing Committee. Enjoy an evening of socializing and viewing the classic cycling film American Flyers, starring Kevin Costner and Rae Dawn Chong.   • January 17 and 19, Street Skills for Cycling Class, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Learn how to cope better with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid accidents, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including on-road bicycling on Saturday.   • January 19, Creating a Healthy Community, sponsored by The Coalition for Community Wellness. Dr Richard Jackson will discuss the connection between suburban sprawl, urban planning, obesity, motorized transportation, exercise and disease.   • January 26, PedalFest 2008, sponsored by Union Bank of Solvang. This is a fundraiser for the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer initiative. For $5 donations, cyclists buy five minutes on a stationary bike, and for each mile they pedal, $3 will be donated by Union Bank and others. All ages and abilities are welcome.   • January 27, Don Riders and Iron Boy, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. These two bicycling films are Santa Barbara student documentary films. Don Riders is about the SB High School students who formed a club to build and ride custom low-rider bikes. It's 35 minutes long. Iron Boy is about 9-year old Brynn Sargent who had completed 45 triathlons. In this 6-minute film, he talks about motivation and dedication. Also showing will be a Musical History of Isla Vista.   • January 30, Safe Routes to School Meeting, sponsored by the SB2S Task Force. Various measures that make it safer for kids to walk and bike to South Coast schools will be discussed. February 2008

  • February 2, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbarta. There will be over $2500 in prizes given away at this Goleta series of races that run all day 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. Races are held along a 0.65-mile loop course. Download the information sheet here. For more, contact Mark Purcell.
  • February 2, Second Annual Ride 4 Rwanda, sponsored by Project Rwanda. Meet mountain bike legend Tom Ritchey and go on a 9-mile ride from Goleta Beach with him to raise funds for his Project Rwanda. That organization is devoted to using the bicycle as a vehicle for economic growth and regeneration in a post-genocide Rwanda. This ride is being organized by current and past SB Middle School students. Registration details are at www.ride4rwanda.org. Bring the printed registration form and waiver to Goleta Beach. The ride will meet at Goleta Beach County Park at 9:00 AM for Rwandan coffee, baked goods and a short talk by Ritchey.
  • February 2, Family Fun & Movie Night, sponsored by Solvang ATOC local organizing committee.   • February 12, Montecito Association meeting, sponsored by the Montecito Association. Among other topics, the MA will consider bikelane plans for Highway 192. The first step toward including them in the County's Regional Transporation Plan is getting MA's approval. Meeting at 4:00 PM, 1469 East Valley Road, Montecito.
  • February 16, Winter Cross Country, sponsored by the Stump Grinder Dirt Club. This is a season preparation event, using the 11.4-mile course of later season races. Lots of rolling hills and single track. Details and registration at www.ridesb.com.
  • February 17-24, Amgen Tour of California, sponsored by Amgen. This professional bicycle stage race will attract professional cycling teams from around the world to compete across 700 miles of California roadway from Palo Alto to Pasadena. Santa Barbara County is the only California county chosen to host two stages. On February 22nd, there will be a time trial in Solvang. And on the 23rd, Stage 6 will start in the City of Santa Barbara and finish in Santa Clarita. We will have booths in both Solvang and Santa Barbara, plus a kids bike race and Cottage Hospital's Health and Wellness Fair before the Santa Barbara stage start.   • February 18-24, Carmichael Training Camp, sponsored by Carmichael Training Systems. Join cyclists of all abilities as you lay the foundation for your cycling goals. CTS Founder Chris Carmichael returns to the Santa Ynez Valley each year because the roads are the perfect training ground for cyclists of all levels. A single package includes airport transportation, meals, hotel, bike fit, plus viewing of the Amgen Tour of California. Details are here.
  • February 20, Bici Centro Volunteer Meeting, sponsored by Bici Centro of Santa Barbara. This is your chance to learn what Bici Centro is doing and how you might be able to contribute to this community bike program.   • February 29-March 2, LCI Training and Certification Seminar, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. Consider becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certified to teach BikeEd to children as well as adults in our community. Certified instructors can teach BikeEd classes. If you are an experienced cyclist you can be an instructor! Learn about the program here. The class is in San Luis Obispo.   • April 13, Don Riders Film, sponsored by Santa Barbara High School. Watch the film Don Riders about a high school club whose members craft shiny low-rider bicycles and trikes. There will be a performance by Dons With Flava, a school hip-hop dance group at 3:00 PM, followed by the film at 3:30, and a Q&A session afterwards with the film's student videographers and composers.   • April 15, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting, sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in our county.   • April 16, Dedication of the Barry Siegel Bikepath, sponsored by Santa Barbara County. Montecito resident Barry Siegel was actively involved in transportation issues for years during retirement.   • May 14-15, The Art and Science of Trails, sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Trails Council. This two-day course is led by Woody Keen, president of the Professional Trail Builders Association. It follows the "Trail Dynamics" approach to trail design as described at www.traildynamics.com/philosophy.asp. The workshop is limited to 40 people and costs $50. Contact Chris Orr to learn more.

  • May 21, Ride of Silence, unsponsored. This ride will commemorate those lost or injured in bicycling crashes in our area. The ride was started in Texas in 2003, and has since grown to over 250 locations worldwide. It's a slow, 12 MPH silent ride of about 8 miles. All Saturday rides end at Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara where a beach festival with food, music and beer garden will be waiting. Saturday night you can be transported back to Camarillo, stay in a local hotel, or camp. On Sunday, after breakfast, there is a 75-mile ride back to Camarillo.   • September 27, Bici Cultura Ride, sponsored by Bici Centro of Santa Barbara. This ride consists of segments and bicyclists are welcome to join any part. It starts at Bici Centro, 601 Montecito Street, Santa Barbara, at 10:00 AM. It then stops at the IV Coop, 6575 Sevilla Road, Isla Vista, before continuing on at 11:00 to El Capitan State Beach. Depanding on agreement, further stops along the way on the return to Santa Barbara.
  • September 27, National Public Lands Day, sponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation. This day runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Tucker's Grove County Park, Area 2. It consists of safety talk, tool use, then clearing trail brush, and a free lunch. Over 100,000 people participated all over the US last year. More details here.
  • September 27-28, Cross-Country and Downhill Races, sponsored by Team Big Bear. These races are part of the California State Series of MTB events. Registration and downhill races Saturday, cross country races Sunday. Free Kids Race for those 10 and under on Sunday at 1:00 PM. Details here.
  • September 28, Carpinteria Triathlon, sponsored by the City of Carpinteria. Choose from the Olympic Course with a 40K bike ride, or the Sprint Course with a 15K bike leg. Relay teams can compete in the Olympic Course. Limited to 800 participants. Bike in mountain foothills through agricultural lands. Start and finish at Carpinteria State Beach.
