January 2006

  • Jack Carter Memorial Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Starting at 8:30 at Tuckers Grove the route goes up Old San Marcos, across Highway 154 and up Painted Cave to East Camino Cielo. Continues east past La Cumbre Peak then down Gibraltar Road, returns to the start via Foothill/Cathedral Oaks. This ride is tough even if you don't party on New Year's Eve.   • January 3, Bicycle Coalition General Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Evening meeting, first Tuesday of the month. At Madam Lu Chinese Restaurant, 3524 State Street, Santa Barbara.   • January 5, Hearing for 101 Bridge in Goleta, sponsored by Caltrans. This public meeting will allow residents to view the proposed overcrossing of Highway 101 that will replace the deteriorating one at the western end of Hollister Avenue. The new one will continue Cathedral Oaks over the freeway. Bikelane connections at both ends and over the bridge are important features.   • January 6, SBCAG Executive Meeting, sponsored by the SB County Association of Governments. At this meeting, the 6-member SBCAG Executive Committee will consider what structure a proposed renewal of Measure D transportation tax might possess to meet residents' needs. This follows the rejection of the prior proposal by the whole Board on December 15th. This meeting has been opened to the public following protests about it being closed. Meeting at 1:30 PM, Buellton Council Chambers, 140 West Highway 246, Buellton.
  • January 18, Transportation Alternatives Board Meeting, sponsored by UCSB. This is the first meeting of 2006 in which the Board will consider its budget and vision for the University's transportation future. It's open to the public at the UCen's Santa Barbara Mission room, time 11:00 AM-12:30 PM.
  • January 19, Montecito Trails Foundation Annual Meeting, sponsored by the MTF. Since 1964 the Montecito Trails Foundation has worked to preserve, maintain, expand, and record trails within Montecito, Summerland, and Carpinteria. Their Annual Meeting will take place at the Chase Palm Park Pavilion, 323 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara at 6:00 PM. Details at http://montecitotrailsfoundation.org.
  • January 21, Romero Canyon Trail Repair, sponsored by the Forest Serivce and Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. Work will continue what was started last November—removal of shale slides, repair of waterbars, and brush cutting. Meet at Skofield Park at 8:30 AM, thencarpool to Romero saddle. We will break from work in time to be back about 2:30. Bring a lunch and water; wear high-topped boots to keep gravel out. Helmets, gloves and tools will be supplied. The Trail Volunteers will have a early dinner of Chicken Ranch BBQ and drinks waiting at Skofield Park upon our return. Please respond to Paul Herning at 962-8415.
  • January 21, Memorial Service for Kendra Payne, sponsored by UCSB students. This service will celebrate the life of UCSB student and triathlete Kendra Payne, hit and killed by a truck on January 11 while she was on a training ride. It will take place at 2:00 PM next to the UCSB Recreation Center.
  • January 21 and 28, Bicycling Skills for Women, sponsored by the SB Bicycle Coalition. We’re offering a two-day course for women, taught by women. If you want to learn the basics of riding your bicycle confidently in a supportive and fun environment, then this is the class for you! The first part is biking instruction inside, the second part is basic repairs and on-road experience. The first class will take place 9:00 AM-1:00 PM, held at the SBCAG Building, 260 North San Antonio Road, Santa Barbara. The second part will take place from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM.   • January 26, Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. We will be meeting to discuss important issues with Measure D renewal and other topics. Meeting 7:00 PM at Nancy Mulholland's house. Contact her at 563-9073 for directions.
  • January 28, Rattlesnake Canyon Trail Repair, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and others. We will be working on finishing a new route up out of the creek just as it heads into the pine forest. Please bring water, lunch and protective gear. Long pants, long-sleeve shirts and eye protection are recommended. Gloves and helmets are required—we will have both available for those who need them. Details from Paul Herning at 962-8415.
  • January 31, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting, sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in the South Coast of our county. The project has a website www.santabarbaracarfree.org, hosts programs and has developed a free map. Meeting at Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort, 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara, 11:00 AM.   • January 31, Townhall Bike Meeting, sponsored by UCSB's AS BIKES Committee. This meeting will address Isla Vista and University concerns about bicycling safety, bicycle thefts, and other Isla Vista crimes. Meeting at 7:00 PM at Embarcadero Hall, 935 Embarcadero del Norte, Isla Vista.

February 2006

  • February 1, Broida Bikepath Ribbon-Cutting, sponsored by UCSB's AS BIKES committee. The new connector bikepath on the eastern campus south of Broida Hall will be officially opened to bicyclists with a ceremony that starts at 10:30 AM, at the western end of the new path. Comments will be made by Supervisor Brooks Firestone, UCSB Chancellor Henry Yang, and others.
  • February 3, Pure Sweet Hell, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. A look at the world of cyclocross bike racing where cyclists negotiate dirt courses with obstacles that require dismounts and carrying their bikes. These winter races often encounter rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. This 60-minute film focuses on the cyclocross community. Showing at 3:30 PM at the Victoria Street Theater, 35 West Victoria Street, Santa Barbara. If you don't have a Festival pass, you can wait in line at the Theater on the afternoon of the showing with the hope that there will be room. It is recommended to be there early.   • February 5, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. This series of Goleta races begin at 8:00 AM along a 0.6-mile loop course. Application details are not yet online, so phone Mark Musicant 966-4554 or markmusicant@cox.net for information.

  • February 7, Goleta Amtrak Station Improvements, sponsored by the City of Goleta's Design Review Board. Proposed improvements, funded by Caltrans, include new bike lockers with cell-phone access.   • February 8, NWD VI - Unchained, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This is the latest film in the New World Disorder NWD series of mountain biking around the world in Bolivia, Utah, Mexico, British Columbia, and more. This 56-minute film is a wildlook at the world's best bikers. Showing at 6:30 PM at the Victoria Street Theater, 35 West Victoria Street, Santa Barbara. If you don't have a Festival pass, you can wait in line at the Theater on the afternoon of the showing with the hope that there will be room. It is recommended to be there early.   • February 9, Support Celebration for the Tour of California, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Host Committee. This special event supports of the first annual Tour of California’s professional cycling race through Santa Barbara. Great food, beer and wine, music by the Austin Thompson Project, door prizes and a special screening of the film NWD VI Unchained. Mondial Private Dining, 201 West Carrillo Street, 7:00-10:00 PM.   • February 10, NWD VI - Unchained, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. See description above. Film shows at 2:00 PM at the Center Stage Theater, 751 Paseo Nuevo, Santa Barbara.
  • February 18, Greenwell Preserve Construction, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. Work on construction of the trail signs/kiosks which will be placed at trailheads. If you don't want to drill, saw, screw, and paint, then come and assemble bike trail bells. Details from Paul Pherning at pherning@cox.net.
  • February 19-26, Tour of California, sponsored by Amgen. This new professional bicycle stage race will attract 16 professional cycling teams from around the world to compete across 700 miles of California roadway from San Francisco to Redondo Beach. The race will pass through Santa Barbara County on February 24 and 25, with one stage finish and another start in the City of Santa Barbara. We will have a booth at the finish line. It's estimated that millions will watch the Tour in person or catch it on ESPN2 television coverage. Details at www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.   • February 20, Bicyclist Safety Press Conference, sponsored by Assemblymember Pedro Nava. This will introduce AB 1941, a new California measure that proposes to change the law so that motor vehicles must pass bicyclists at a minimum distance of 3 feet. It's called the "Measure of Safety Law.". Santa Barbara County Courthouse's sunken garden, 10:00 AM.

March 2006

  • March 4, Island View Classic, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. The UCSB Cycling Team will bring criterium racing back to Isla Vista after a seven year absence. There will be two races, one a traditional collegiate criterium, the other a cruiser criterium. All UCSB fraternities and sororities are invited to enter three-person cruiser bike teams in a three-lap race that will help fund Isla Vista's planned skate park.   • March 5, Bike Movie and Cruise, sponsored by Matadors Bici Club. This is the first of a series of 2006 monthly events at Goleta's Mercury Lounge. The movie starts at 6:00 PM, followed by a cruise to downtown Santa Barbara. Brings lights, lock, and warm clothes. Check the weather, it may rain. Mercury Lounge, 5871 Hollister, Old Town Goleta.
  • March 7, Bicycle Coalition General Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Meeting at noon, first Tuesday of the month.   • March 15, Ortega Hill Bikepath Groundbreaking, sponsored by Caltrans. This is the long-awaited bikepath that circumvents the narrow, winding Ortega Hill Road between Montecito and Summerland. Projected to be finished in late 2006 or early 2007, we look forward to the lighted path above Highway 101 with ocean views and new landscaping.   • March 18, Cold Springs Trail Maintenance, sponsored by the Trail Alliance. Help work on the West Fork of Cold Springs Trail. Meet at the Mission at 8:30 AM, carpool up Gibraltar to the top of the West Fork. Bring rain gear and the usual for trail projects.   • March 18-19, Choo Choo Century, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Take the train to San Luis Obispo on Saturday, spend the night in Pismo Beach and bike back to the Santa Barbara area on Sunday. Riders must be pre-registered; starting between 4:30 and 7:30 AM, depending on your estimated total time. Rest stops along the way, sag support. Elevation gain is 7500 feet.   • March 26, Basic Bike Maintenance Class, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. April 2006

  • April 2, UCSB Sprint Triathlon, sponsored by the UCSB Triathlon Team. This new early season sprint race consists of a 1/2-mile ocean swim, 16-mile bike, and a 3-mile run. The bike portion consists of a rolling bike course through Santa Barbara's lemon orchards. Details at http://ucsbtriathlon.org/race.
  • April 2-April 8, Solvang Spring Tour, sponsored by Planet Ultra. Seven days of rides out of Solvang, each ride 30-110 miles long, returning to Solvang each night. Chose each day from a shorter or longer ride. Unique back roads that other organized tours miss. Unsupported, but suggested rest and meal stops are offered along the way.   • April 15, Measure D Public Forum, sponsored by the Citizens Planning Association. This free forum is titled "Measure D: Where do we go from here?"   • April 19, Measure D Community Forum, sponsored by the League of Women Voters.   • April 19-June 7, Elings Park Mountain Bike Clinic, sponsored by Elings Park. Experienced instructors will guide your child aged 10-14 through the basics of trail etiquette, bike maintenance, and riding skills and will prepare participants to compete in our Santa Barbara Bike Festival. The clinic is open to riders of all abilities. A functioning mountain bike and a helmet are required Details and registration at www.elingspark.org.
  • April 20, SBCAG Measure D Meeting, sponsored by SBCAG. This is the culminating meeting when the proposed Measure D tax renewal will be discussed by our Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG). So far, it looks promising for people who bicycle, however a suggestion to cut proposed bicyclist funding to a third has been introduced. At the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 105 E.   • April 21-24, Lower Buckhorn/Indian Creek Trail Project, sponsored by the Los Padres Forest Association. Trail maintenance from Lower Buckhorn to Indian Creek camp, including campsite fire prevention and cleanup at Lower Buckhorn, Upper Buckhorn, Peg Leg, and Indian Creek.   • April 23, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. It runs from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. We will offer the community our booth, bike parking, and bike check-ups.
  • April 27, Transportation and Circulation Committee, sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. The committee will receive updates on the upcoming Bicycle Station and bikelanes on Mission Street.
  • April 28-30, Annual Firestone Classic Series, sponsored by RideSB. This weekend features registration and course pre-riding on Friday; Chamberlin Ranch Downhill and Short Track Cross Country on Saturday; and Cross Country Race and the free Kids Race on Sunday. Among the exciting riding, there are meals, camping, prize raffle, T-shirt, live music and a beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos.   • April 28, Santa Barbara Critical Mass Ride, sponsored by nobody. A bicycle en mass to take a lane or two of those otherwise dominated by the petrol powered. Surpass the mass deemed critical as we glide into the stream called main. Pedal through a message to the State, slide by the ocean with your means of motion, and cycle the street Santa Barbara back triumphantly. Alameda Park, 5:00 PM.
  • April 29, Gaviota OCR Endurance Challenge, sponsored by Paul Shields. The 71.5-mile tour consists of a 9.5-mile ocean paddleboard leg, a 26-mile beach / trail run, and a 36-mile ridgeline mountain bike leg. The total elevation gain is over 10,000 feet. This is a demanding course, and you should be well trained if you are going to attempt this. The record time of 10 hours, 14 minutes was set in 2003. Details at www.gaviotaocr.com/info.html
  • April 30, New Bike Clinic, sponsored by Open Air Bicycles. Fo those who have recently bought a bike and want to learn basics about operation and maintenance, consider this clinic.   • May 11, 18 and 20, Bicycling Skills for Women, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. We’re offering a three-day course for women, taught by women. The first part is indoor biking instruction, from 5:30-8:30 PM on the 11th. The second part is basic repairs, from 5:30-8:30 PM on the 18th. The third part is on-road experience, from 1:00-5:00 PM on the 20th. They will be held at 630 Garden Street, in Downtown Santa Barbara.   • May 13, Jesusita Trail Maintenance, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Trails Alliance. The South Country trails need maintenance, so join other Trails Alliance members on the second Saturday of each month. Meet 8:30 AM, Cater Water Plant on San Roque Road, Santa Barbara.   • May 13, Bike Week Celebration, sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition. World cycling tourist Willie Weir will be the featured entertainer offering us his tales and adventures in South East Asia at this catered dinner event at the Chase Palm Park Center, 236 East Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara.
