January 2005
- January 1, Jack Carter Memorial Ride, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is the real way to start 2005—with a climb to La Cumbre Peak. Climb up Old San Marcos and Painted Cave, cross Camino Cielo, then descend Gibralter Road. Great views from up there. Call Hildy Hoffman at 964 0802 for ride details.
- January 2, Solvang Cyclocross, sponsored by SG Productions. This race, the second of two local races, is part of the Southern California Cyclocross Cup series. Prizes valued at over $1000 will be awarded winners. If you don't have a cyclocross bike, use your mountain bike. Races start at 9:00 AM at the Hans Christian Anderson Park in Solvang. - January 4, Bicycle Coalition General Meeting. This is another one of our evening meetings. There will be an optional no-host dinner at 6:00 PM, with our meeting following at 7:00. - January 8, Street Skills for Cyclists, sponsored by the SB Bicycle Coalition. Learn how to cope better with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid accidents, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including an optional 6 hours of on-road bicycling. The class will take place 9:00 AM-1:00 PM, Chuck Anderson is the teacher, and it will be held at SBCAG, 260 N San Antonio Road, Santa Barbara. - January 12, Bike to Work 2005 Forum, sponsored by Traffic
Solutions. This 3-hour afternoon meeting will consider the format
of bicycle commuting outreach in view of the declining attendance
at Bike to Work Day since a peak in 1998. The focus group of participants
will help reach a consensus about what our Bike to Work projects should
look like and what community partners will help coordinate the events.

- January 15, Ride for Hope, sponsored by Griffen Bikes.
This metric century ride is out of Beatty Park in Lompoc. It's a charity
ride that will benefit leukemia research at the City of Hope. More

- January 16, Officials Clinic, sponsored by the UCSB Cycling. This clinic is for anyone interested in becoming an USCF and NORBA class "C" Official. It starts at 11:00 AM and will last about six hours. When you have your Official's license, you can officiate at all the local races. Read more at www.scnca.org. - January 24, Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors meeting. We will be meeting to discuss important dealing with the County staff support of bicycling and other topics. Meeting 7:00 PM at Ralph Fertig's home.
- January 25-January 29, Review Goleta General Plan, sponsored
by the City of Goleta. Goleta is developing a General Plan that describes
transportation and other city guidelines. They are holding five public
workshops at different Goleta locations and times, as follows:

- January 29, Jesusita Trail Maintenance, sponsored by the Trails Alliance. This is the first of two days to repair storm damage to the Jesusita Trail. Volunteers will clear out debris, add erosion control features and fix washouts. Meet at the trailhead just above Cater Filtration Plant at 8:30 AM and be out on the trail by 9:00 AM at the latest. Please sign up ahead of time via email to ray@sb-outdoors.org so we can plan for tools, etc. Bring lunch, water, gloves and enthusiasm; wear long pants, sturdy shoes or boots, eye protection and a helmet. - January 29, Poor College Kids Road Race, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. This series of races will consist of 34, 68, and 102-mile courses, depending on your race category. - February 2, Paul Sanchez returns. After biking around the US, local resident Paul Sanchez will celebrate his return home after seven months and 10,000 miles on the road. The reception ceremony will be in front of the Biltmore Hotel in Montecito at noon. His ride supported children with learning disabilities. Read about his trip at www.perimeter.us.
- February 4, "Emmanuel's Gift" movie, part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. World premier of this story of a handicapped man Emmanuel Yeboah who bicycled across Ghana. His goal was to raise funds and awareness of the plight of physically challenged individuals. Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, the movie will show at the Victoria Street Theater at 3:30 PM, and Yeboah and the filmmakers will attend. If you don't have a Festival pass, you can wait in line at the Victoria Street Theater on the afternoon of the showing with the hope that there will be room. - February 6, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Cycling. There will be prizes worth $2400 given away at this Goleta series of races. Races begin at 8:00 AM along a 0.6-mile loop course. - February 8, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting. Sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in the South Coast of our county. The project has a website www.santabarbaracarfree.org, hosts programs and has developed a free map. Meeting at the Inn of the Spanish Garden, 915 Garden Street, in Santa Barbara, 11:00 AM. - February 12-13, Trail Building School, sponsored by IMBA and the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. IMBA's Trail Care Crew is acclaimed as the most knowledgeable trail maintenance crew worldwide. This free two day class will focus on building and maintaining sustainable trails—trails that are environmental friendly, control water flow, reduce user conflicts, and improve all users enjoyment. Saturday morning will take place in Goleta and will consist of in class lecture, slides, questions, and training; the afternoon will have hands-on trail layout and design of a new trail at Elings Park. - January 23, Safe Routes to School meeting, sponsored by COAST, the Bicycle Coaition, and others. This meeting will consider Bike to School Day activities and ongoing coordination to make conditions safer for kids to walk and bike to schools in the South Coast of Santa Barbara County. 1:00-2:30 PM at the Louise Lowry Davis Center, 1232 De La Vina Street, Santa Barbara. - February 24, De Anza Trail Ceremony, sponored by various trail groups. The Juan Bautista de Anza migrating group of 300 soldiers and pioneers from Mexico to found San Francisco spent a night east of Carpinteria on February 24, 1776. There will be a sign dedication commorating their stop at 1:00 PM at Rincon County Park.

- March 5, Trail Maintenance Day, sponsored by the Trails Alliance. Weather permitting, volunteers will clear and maintain local trails. Meet at the Jesusita Cater water Treatment Plant (top of San Roque) trailhead at 8:30 AM. Bring lunch, plenty of water and lots of enthusiasm! - March 6, Not the IV Ghetto Crit, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. This is a collegiate competition that was to be held in downtown Isla Vista, but a surf shop protested. So it will be at Goleta Research Park instead, starting at 9:00 AM. Details at http://ucsbcycling.org/upload/ucsbcrit05.pdf.
- March 6, Bicycle Swap Meet, sponsored by Java Station. Buy what you want, sell what you don't need: vintage, road, mountain and BMX bikes and parts. Enjoy a tri-tip BBQ and live blues band. - March 8, Annual Meeting, sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Trails Council. Everybody is invited to join Trails Council members in honoring Michael Feeney with the annual Environmental Award for his work with the Land Trust of Santa Barbara County. Eva Inbar, local bicycling and walking advocate will speak. The program will showcase Land Trust accomplishments. - March 12, Ellwood Mesa Celebration, sponsored by Friends of Ellwood Coast & Ellwod School. Thirty years in the saving, this preserved coastal land is a legacy from the present our future. Upcoming trails will support bicycling for commuting and recreation. Live music, children's activities, guided tours, lunch, and displays. - March 12-13, Choo Choo Century, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Take the train to San Luis Obispo on Saturday, spend the night in Pismo Beach and bike back to the Santa Barbara area on Sunday. - March 14, San Jose Creek Bikepath meeting, sponsored by the City of Goleta. This Goleta Planning Agency hearing will provide information about the "mitigated negative declaration" study for the City's portion of the proposed bikepath south of Hollister Avenue. What they are saying is that, while there are some environmental problems, they can be mitigated by suggested actions. There will be a representative from the County ready to discuss their section of the path that will continue south and connect with the Obern Trail east of Goleta Beach. - March 19, Elings Park Trail construction, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. This is a continuation of the Santa Barbara trail started during the IMBA Trail School Weekend. Help prep the trail for your everyday fun and this summer's race. Please bring your own water and sunscreen; wear long pants and a helmet (your bike helmet is OK, or use one of their hardhats). - March 21, Santa Barbara Bikestation meeting, sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. This is an opportunity to look at the proposed Bikestation that will be part of the Granada Garage parking structure currently under construction. New plans for secure bike parking will be presented and bicyclists will be asked to comment on additional facilities they might want there. - March 25, Critical Mass Bike Ride. This is a new evening monthly Santa Barbara event that the Bicycle Coalition has been asked to list here. There have been all kinds of Critical Mass bike rides around the world, ranging from fun, law-abiding group rides to lawless in-your-face protests that have involved violence. We hope that this ride will be the former. Make sure your bike has legal lights and reflectors for nighttime riding. Meet at the Alameda Park Gazebo in Santa Barbara at 5:00 PM; ride leaves at 5:30. - March 26, Solvang Double Century, sponsored by Planet Ultra. A whole 200 miles from Solvang Morro Bay and back. Riders must be pre-registered; starting in waves between 5:30 and 7:30 AM, depending on your estimated total time. Five rest stops along the way. Elevation gain is only 750 feet, although Drum canyon comes along mile 175. Further information at www.planetultra.com/solvang.
- March 28-April 3, Solvang Spring Tour, sponsored by Planet Ultra. Six days of rides out of Solvang, each ride 50-100 miles long, returning to Solvang each night. They promise unique back roads that other organized tours miss. Unsupported except for a check point during the one century day. Elevation gains vary from 2900-5700 feet, distances from 50-112 miles. - April 3, Spring Hazard Sprint Triathlon, sponsored by the UCBS Triathlon Team. This used to be "Splash & Dash," however last year they added an 18-mile cycling ride to make it a true triathlon. Limited to 300 participants. Location is Campus Point at UCSB with the first group starting at 8:00 AM. Bike race is on paths and city streets. Post race refreshments and ceremony. - April 20, Corps of ReDiscovery Film, sponsored by Santa Barbara Middle School. Last year, a group of students from Santa Barbara Middle School went on a bike trip that followed Lewis and Clark's trek across the country. Bret Suding and John Seigel Boettner have created a film that documents the bike tour. It's at 7:30 PM at the School, 2300 Garden Street, Santa Barbara.
- April 22-24, Firestone Mountain Bike Weekend, sponsored by RideSB and Stump Grinder Production. This weekend features registration and course pre-riding on Friday; Chamberlin Ranch Downhill and Dirt Criterium on Saturday; and State Championship series Cross Country Race and the free Youth Series Kids Race on Sunday. Among the exciting riding, there are meals, camping, prize raffle, T-shirt, live music and a beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos. Event details at www.ridesb.com.
- April 23, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. It runs from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM at the County Courthouse in Downtown Santa Barbara. We will once again have our booth, bike parking, and bike check-ups. - April 23-24, Southern California Bicycle Expo. Celebrate the sport and lifestyle of bicycling at the ninth annual Southern California Bicycle Expo, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Includes bike rides for adults and kids, indoor bike test track, stunts and trials riders. Details at www.bikeshow.com.
- April 29, Critical Mass Bike Ride, sponsored by nobody. There have been all kinds of Critical Mass bike rides around the world, ranging from fun, law-abiding group rides to lawless in-your-face protests that have involved violence and arrests. This monthly ride started in March, and was mostly law-abiding. Meet at the Alameda Park Gazebo in Santa Barbara at 5:00 PM. Direct questions to 450-5252.
- April 29-30, Parade of Green Buildings, sponsored by the Sustainability Project. The Bicycle Coalition is offering a bike ride that includes 9 of the 15 commercial, residential and gardening sites that encompass sustainable building or management practices. - May 6-8, Sisquoc River Backpack Maintenance Trip, sponsored by Los Padres Forest Association. Backpack in Friday, work Saturday, and backpack out Sunday. A complete BBQ meal is supplied Saturday night. There's about one mile of brushing left to reach South Fork Station. The Upper Sisquoc is really beautiful this time of year. Meet at the Ranger station in Santa Maria at 8:00 AM on Friday and carpool to the trail head from there. Contact Mike Smith at 605-1735.
- May 7, Rattlesnake Project, sponsored by the Trails Alliance. Mostly brushing but possibly some tread work. Please wear long pants and shirts, trail shoes, gloves, eye protection and a helmet (bike helmets are fine). Bring lunch and enthusiasm. We'll have water and Gatorade for you. - May 14-22, Bike Week 2005, sponsored by the SB Bicycle Coalition. A week of activities for people who bicycle. Our Bike Week flags will be flying on State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara. - Mary 14, Elings Park Trail Maintenance, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers.This is a continuation of work on the new trails at Elings Park. - May 14, Children's Festival, sponsored by the Family Service Agency. This fun day of activities will take place in Alameda Park in Downtown Santa Barbara, from 10:00-4:00. The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition will be there to promote safe bicycling to schools and offer inexpensive helmets for kids.
- May 14, Bike Week Celebration, sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition. World cycling tourist Willie Weir will be the featured entertainer presenting The Bad Road: Cycling Turkey at this catered dinner event at the Chase Palm Park Center, 236 East Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara. It starts at 6:00 PM and includes bicycling awards. Look here for details.
- May 15, What Matters Most with Willie Weir, sponsored by SB City College's Adult Education. Adventure cyclist Willie Weir will talk about what matters most in life and how acting on those values effects our lives. Located at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum, 21 West Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara. Registration starts at 1:00 PM, presentation and discussion from 1:30-3:30.
- May 17, Bike to School Day, sponsored by COAST. Events are being arranged at individual South Coast schools. Bike rodeos and bicycle safety instruction will be offered at participating schools prior to Bike Week. Contact coordinator Jessica Sheeter at 962-7960.

- May 19, Touring by Bike, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition. Learn from expert touring cyclists what's involved in choosing a commercial tour or do-it-yourself, packing, loaded touring or touring light, group or alone, how to choose routes, and lots more. Presentations by Wilson and Gail Hubbell, Nancy Mulholland, and Mark Sapp. Even if you're not the touring kind, you'll enjoy hearing the adventures that it can bring. - October 27, Marketing Car-Free Transportation, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and Santa Barbara Car Free. A presentation by Ralph Fertig and Mary Byrd will be given as part of the regular meeting of the City of Santa Barbara's Transportation and Circulation Committee meeting. - November 3 and 5, Street Skills for Cyclists class, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and Cottage Healthcare System. Learn how to cope better with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid accidents, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including an optional 6 hours of on-road bicycling. The class will take place 5:00 PM-9:00 PM. Nancy Mulholland is the teacher, and it will be held at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. - November 19, Upper Romero Canyon Trail Maintenance, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. Meet at Skofield Park at 9:00 AM and carpool to Romero saddle. From there we will hike east along the ridge and work down the trail. We will break from work in time to be back at the cars about 2:30. Bring a lunch and plenty of water as this upper trail can be toasty. Sturdy high topped boots help keep the gravel out. Helmets, gloves and tools will be supplied. - December 3, Jesusita Trail Maintenance. sponsored by the Santa Barbara Trails Alliance. The work will concentrate on brushing, improving water control structures, and clearing slides. Bring plenty of water, lunch, sturdy boots, gloves, and a helmet. Long pants and shirt are recommended as there is poison oak.
