January 2003

  • January 11, Winter Cyclocross Series, sponsored by SG Productions. This race is the third of a new three-race cyclocross series for Santa Barbara County. Prizes for the three races total over $2000. This race takes place at Campus Pointe Industrial Park in Goleta, starting at 9:30 AM, depending on class. Catered Chicken Ranch lunch follows.   • January 28, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting. Sponsored by the APCD to promote car-free travel in the South Coast area. The project has a website www.santabarbaracarfree.org and hosts programs.   • February 8, The Good Old Days Road Race, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Club. This series of races will be held near Los Olivos. The course is a mostly-flat 34 mile loop, but with three short, steep climbs. Details from Mike Hecker 966-1807 and at www.ridesb.com.

  • March 5, UCSB Housing Project Meeting. This "scoping meeting" will consider the proposed UCSB San Clemente graduate student housing and adjacent El Colegio Road changes. The bikepath will change and bikelanes may be added to El Colegio. San Clemente will house 976 students and require 730 parking spaces on 12 acres.   • March 8, Solvang Century, sponsored by SCOR. The West's big seasonal kickoff ride. Choose 100 or 50-mile rides starting from Solvang.   • March 25, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting. Sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in the South Coast of our county.   • April 1, General Meeting. Meeting the first Tuesday of each month. This is another evening meeting that gives us an informal atmosphere to chat and allows those who cannot attend a noon meeting a chance to meet other Coalition members.   • April 12, Gaviota OCR Endurance Challenge, sponsored by Paul Shields. This event is not for everybody. It consists of kayaking from Refugio to Haskell's Beach, running in the sand to Arroyo Burro Beach, running on trails and roads to La Cumbre Peak, then mountain biking 29 miles back to Refugio.   • April 23-26, Perfection on Wheels, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Fair & Expo. This is a BMX stunt team from La Jolla. They will perform at 5:00 and 7:00 PM on April 23, 24 and 25; then at 1:00, 3:00 and 7:00 PM on April 26. Earl Warren Showgrounds, Los Positas Road near Highway 101. Admission & car parking charge, but bike parking is free.
  • April 26, Gourmet Century, Sponsored by Chris King Precision Components. This is the 14th annual ride, known for excellent food from breakfast coffee and pastries to an Italian dinner. Ride is 100 km long through Santa Ynez Valley hills and farms. Limited to 350 riders. Find details at www.chrisking.com/events/events_gc_mmddyy.html.
  • April 26, Santa Barbara Trail Day, Sponsored by the US Forest Service. Spend a day rehabilitation the 4-mile Blue Canyon Trail that connects to Cottam Camp. Meet at the Santa Barbara Mission at 8:00 AM to carpool to the trailhead. Blue Canyon Trail was abandoned by the Forest Service after slides in the mid-1990s.   • April 26-27, Firestone Walker Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, sponsored by Stump Grinder Production. The race is the only California race that is part of the American Mountain Bike Challenge Series. It features a 9-mile course, barbeque, prize raffle, T-shirt, kids race, live music and beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos. Event details at www.ridesb.com/Firestone_03.htm including online registration.
  • April 27, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. We will host a booth there for our 12th year. Volunteer to help staff our booth or just visit (by bike, of course) for a fun and educational time. We will be giving away $180 in certificates to use at local bike shops to six bicyclists who bike to Earth Day. Also, Santa Barbara Car Free will be giving away prizes to people who bike, walk or bus to the festival. It runs from 10 AM to 5:30 PM at the County Courthouse Sunken Gardens. May 2003

  • May 3, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Society. This well-supported ride is your choice of scenic tours starting in Carpinteria.   • May 10, Spring Mountain Bike Race. Two race events will be held at Elings Park in Santa Barbara. The X-Country course consists of 2, 3 or 4 laps of 3 miles each, depending on your class. The Super D Downhill Race will use the downhill portion of the XC course featuring a 280-foot drop. Details at www.sbmtb.com or by email from sbmtb.edbrown@cox.net.
  • May 10, Sisquoc Road Race, sponsored by Cyclone Racing Team. A day of road racing around Sisquoc includes the Junior California and Nevada championships. The 10.75-mile loop is open to light traffic.
  • May 11, Junior State Criterium Championships, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. A complementary day to the Sisquoc Road Race, this day includes the criterium part of the Junior California and Nevada state championships. Races at Research Park in Goleta. Details at 692-2766.
  • May 12-30, Bike to Work Challenge, sponsored by Traffic Solutions. The employer with the most bike commute trips between May 12 and 30th will win a catered lunch.   • May 13, Bike Commute Class, sponsored by Hazard's Cyclesport and the SB Bicycle Coalition. Open to anyone who wants to know how to commute better by bicycle. Get a free safety check from a bike mechanic and learn how to ride safely in traffic, and what gear to wear. 6:30-7:30 PM, at Hazard's Cyclesport, 735 Chapala Street, Santa Barbara.
  • May 14, Bike Commute Class, sponsored by VeloPro Cyclery and the SB Bicycle Coalition. Same program as the previous class. 6:30-7:30 PM, VeloPro Cyclery, 5887 Hollister Avenue, Goleta.

  • May 17, Chris King Trail Daze, sponsored by Chris King Precision Components. This is an opportunity for all trail users to work together maintaining various front country trails. The day includes breakfast, trail brush clearing and tread repairing, lunch, more trail work, and a BBQ dinner followed by a raffle of prizes. Meet at Manning Park group site 9 at 8:00 AM.   • May 31, Vandenberg Grand Prix, sponsored by Team Tailwinds. The criterium course is a 1.4-mile flat loop. Total distances range from 21 to 38 miles, depending on your class.   • June 1, Senior State Road Race Championships, sponsored by Team Tailwinds. This is the California & Nevada Senior Road Race Championships.   • June 13-15, Santa Ynez Get Away, sponsored by Scenic Cycling Adventures. This weekend getaway is centered in Solvang. Two nights and three days of cycling in the Santa Ynez Valley.   • June 20-22, Bike Trek for Life and Breath, sponsored by the American Lung Association of California. Ride all three days or just on Saturday, June 21st.   • July 12, Semana Nautica Super D Race, sponsored by Santa Barbara Mountain Biking. This Super D event is like a downhill race but not as technical and has some flat and short hill sections.   • July 14, Semana Nautica Time Trail. This time trail takes place the second Monday of each month during summer, but this one is the Semana Nautica event. Just show up at Cathedral Oaks and Fairview at 6:00 PM.
  • July 26, Windmill Century, sponsored by the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. Choice of full century or metric century rides out of Los Alamos over lightly-traveled roads. Enjoy cycling past range land, vineyards, horse farms, hills, canyons, and even windmills. Food stops, sag support, and Santa Maria style top sirloin barbecue at the end. This is a new 5-week NORBA-sanctioned training series of Tuesday evening races. You can register for any race or the entire series. Races will start at 5:00 PM. Location is Campus Pointe Industrial Park, off Los Carneros south of Highway 101 in Goleta. Dinner included. Details at www.bikesb.com.
  • August 10, Member Appreciation Barbecue. Back by popular demand, our second annual member party will take place at Goleta Beach County Park at 1:00 PM. It's a partial pot-luck, open only to members, their family and friends. Mark your calendars and watch for an invitation to this great annual gathering.
  • August 10, Front Country Trail Care Series 2003, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Trail Volunteers and others. Join others in maintaining Romero Canyon Trail singletrack.   • August 23-24, Santa Barbara Triathlon, sponsored by Adventours Outdoor Excursions. The Saturday races will have a field of 600 competitors in the Long Course (bike leg is 34 miles) and 330 in the Sprint Course (with a 6-mile bike leg).   • September 20, Trail Ride and BBQ, sponsored by the Montecito Trails Foundation. Join other users of Montecito's trails at this popular annual event. Before the BBQ starts, you can join others on a hike, horseback ride, family bike ride, or mountain ride. They all start at 11:45 AM at the Cleese Ranch, 2349 East Valley Road. Montecito. This is a 8-day charity tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles, with a 6-day option that ends in Solvang. Camping each night, hot showers, all meals, gear transport, bike repair, and more.   • September 28, Carpinteria Triathlon, sponsored by Carpinteria Parks & Recreation. Choose from the long course with a 40K bike ride, or the short chourse with a 15K bike leg.   • October 2, Safe Routes to School Workshop, sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. Although the emphasis of this public workshop is on safe walking to school, we should be there to make sure that recommendations include safe biking as well.   • October 4, Fall Bike Auction, sponsored by UCSB's Community Service Organization. Abandoned, impounded, and donated bikes will be auctioned off. Viewing at 9:00, auction begins at 10:00. UCSB lot 32, behind the Public Safety Building. For info, phone 893-2433.

  • October 12, Solvang Cyclocross, sponsored by SG Productions. This race kicks the first of a three-race cyclocross series in Santa Barbara County. Others are in November 30 and January 4.   • October 18, Bike Tour & Fest, sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Starting from Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara with breakfast, take either the 12, 30, 60 or 100-mile rides.   • October 19, Refugio Mountain Bike Challenge, sponsored by the Stuart C. Gildred family YMCA. This new race is an 8-mile uphill event with prizes in 8 categories. Afterwards, cool off with an 8-mile return downhill. Optional 6-mile road Family Fun Ride on rolling hills. Free barbeque at the YMCA on North Refugio Road afterwards.   • October 18-19, Goleta Lemon Festival, sponsored by several organizations. The Bicycle Coaliiton will have a booth for both days. Bike to the Festival! Eat lemon pie! Stop by our booth! Girsh Park, 7050 Phelps Road, Goleta, 10:00-5:00 both days.
  • October 26, Goleta Old Town Evaluation, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition and the Livable Streets Coalition. Dan Burden, renowned expert on bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly community design, will lead a walk around Old Town Goleta from 1:00-5:00 PM to assess conditions, then offer his observations and suggestions during an evening workshop that starts at 7:00 PM at the Goleta Valley Community Center, 5679 Hollister Avenue, Goleta. This 8-hour, three-session course will give you confidence to bike under most conditions.   • November 5 and 12, Public Workshops on Ellwood-Devereux Open Space. These two identical meetings will present preliminary concepts for trail locations and related improvements for the 665-acre Ellwood-Devereux open space plan. Exhibits will be available for viewing at 6:30, and the workshops begin at 7:00 PM, Dos Pueblos High School cafeteria, 7266 Alameda Avenue, Goleta.   • November 14-16, League Certified Instructor Class. This class is open to those interested in teaching "BikeEd" bicycle classes to adults and youth.   • November 15, Fall Trails Day, sponsored by Los Padres Forest Association, Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers, Santa Baarbara Trails Council, and the Sierra Club. This day, volunteers will maintain a section of Blue Canyon Trail between Forbush and Cottom Camps. Bikers are needed to haul tools in trailers to the work area.   • November 20, Scoping Meeting for UCSB's San Clemente Housing, sponsored by UCSB and Santa Barbara County. UCSB is proposing a 976-bed housing complex for graduate students on the north side of El Colegio Road. The County is proposing to keep El Colegio as a 2-lane road with 6 roundabouts between Stadium Road and Embarcadero Del Sur. An Initial Study will be available for review before the projects enter the Draft Environmental Impact Report process.   • November 24, Tour of Rediscovery Chronicle, sponsored by Santa Barbara Middle School.   • November 30, Southern California Cyclocross Championship, sponsored by SG Productions. This race is the regional CA & NV championship as well as the second in a three-race cyclocross series for Santa Barbara County. Others are October 12 and January 4.   • December 9-10, Cachuma Lake recreation meetings, sponsored by the US Bureau of Reclamation. Two public meetings will be held to view a proposed management plan that includes opportunities for new trails in the Cachuma Lake Recreation Area.
