January 2000

  • January 4, General Meeting. First meeting of 2000! We’ll be starting our tenth year of advocacy and looking to the future. Note that our general noon meetings are now on the first Tuesday of each month and have moved to the first floor meeting room. February 2000

  • February 6, Mothballs 2000. Sponsored by Echelon of Santa Barbara. Season opener criterium races at Research Park in Goleta. Over $2200 in award prizes. Phone Steve Daniels at 899-3027.

  • March 11, Solvang Century. Sponsored by SCOR. The West’s big seasonal kickoff ride. Choose 100 or 50-mile rides starting from Solvang.   • March 18-19, Choo-Choo Century. Sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Take the train to San Luis Obispo, pedal to Pismo Beach, then on to Santa Barbara Sunday.   • March 19, De Anza Historic Trail ceremony. A sign commemorating camping location #76 of the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition will be unveiled. Located on the Atascadero Trail near the intersection of Patterson Avenue in Goleta. Ceremony at 2:00 PM. Bicyclists are especially welcome. Details from Vie Obern, 682-3175.

April 2000

  • April 22, Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. A day full of fun & environmental appreciation. The Bicycle Coalition will again have a booth there, offering encouragement to a sympathetic audience. Contact coordinator Pierre Delong by phone at 683-0034 or by email at TravelingPierre@aol.com.
  • April 29, Gourmet Century, sponsored by King Cycle Group. “The most civilized big bike ride in the country.” A six-course, 100-km feast with bicycling between the courses. Ride starts in Solvang with coffee, juice, breakfast breads, and fruit; it ends with a grilled lemon-chive chicken dinner. Phone 800-523-6008.
  • April 30, Cycle for Cats, sponsored by the Animal Shelter Assistance Program in Goleta. Have a fun ride of 12 or 32 miles and help a good cause. Food, raffle prizes, entertainment, tour of cat shelter. Phone 683-3368.

May 2000

  • May 13-21, Bike Week, sponsored by the Bicycle Coalition and many others. A 9-day bicycling love fest with something for everybody.
  • May 13-14, Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, sponsored by SG Productions. Real competitive racing in Santa Ynez Valley. Free kids’ racing, product expo, barbecue, raffle, live band and beer garden. Saturday registration and course testing; Sunday racing itself. Phone 966-1807 or email mhecktone@aol.com for details.
  • May 20, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Diabetes Society. Starting at the Firestone-Walker Brewery in Buellton, riders have a choice of three road rides (100, 50 or 15 miles) or a 50-mile mountain ride. Wonderful support, barbecue lunch, and scenic cycling past Santa Ynez Valley vineyards, horse and ostrich farms. Pledge required. Phone 685-3556 or visit www.sbada.org.
  • May 20, Sisquoc Road Race, sponsored by Cyclone Racing Club. This includes the Junior State Championships. Races out of Sisquoc for USCF categories with distances from 11 to 86 miles. Details at www.cycloneracing.org. Phone 925-2875.

June 2000

  • June 23-25, Bike Trek for Life and Breath, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Your choice of a three-day trek or a one-day ride (June 24). Training rides, bike shop discounts, and pledge help before Trek. Frequent rest stops, fantastic food, music, massage, and camping near Los Olivos during the Trek. Rides 20-50 miles a day.   • June 24, Summer Kickoff Trail Maintenance, sponsored by Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and the US Forest Service. Help maintain a local trail and meet dedicated fellow bikers. July 2000

  • July 22, Windmill Century, sponsored by the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. Choice of full century or metric century rides out of Los Alamos over lightly-traveled roads. August 2000

  • August 26, Santa Barbara County Triathlon, sponsored by Adventours. Two events of different lengths each offer a swim, bike ride and run. The bicycle leg is either 6 miles or 34 miles long. Expo, music, awards ceremony and lunch after. Register online at www.adventours-inc.com.

September 2000

  • September 16-17, Global XIX Volkssport, sponsored by 30th Services Squadron at VAFB and Central Coast Peregrine Pathfinders. There are non-competitive walks and bike rides both days on the Vandenberg Air Force Base. You can choose bike rides of either 15.5 or 31 miles long. Chose one of four rides that range from 15 to 100 miles long, all out of Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara.   • October 28, People Powered Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. There are three rides that are 100, 63, and 30 miles long. The full century challenges you with 7800 feet of climbing! Start is Firestone Vineyard Meadows near Los Olivos. November 2000

  • November 4, Solvang Prelude 2000, sponsored by SCOR. Wind down the bicycling season with this popular ride. Choose from three distances -- 25 miles, 50 miles, or 63 miles, mostly around the rural Santa Ynez Valley. Full support and bike expo.
