February 1999

  • February 1, Bike to Work 1999 Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. We will be working on countywide events as well as planning for a “Bike Week.” Meet 12:00 noon, SB City Public Works conference room, 630 Garden Street, Santa Barbara. Phone Johathan Humfrey 688-9507.

  • March 13, Solvang/Santa Maria Century, sponsored by SCOR. This is the West’s big seasonal kickoff ride. Choose 100 or 50-mile rides starting from Solvang or Santa Maria. Pre-ride dinner, post-ride expo and barbecue. Register online at www.bikescor.com/solvang/welcome.htm or phone 562-690-9693.
  • March 20, Echelon Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. Even if you don't race, come by Alameda Park in Santa Barbara to cheer on local cyclists. Details at 968-9673.
  • March 20-21, Choo-Choo Century, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Take the train to San Luis Obispo, pedal to Pismo Beach, then on to Santa Barbara Sunday. Includes hotel and sag support; meals are bought on the way. Open to 35 club members. Phone 965-8907.

  • April 10, Montecito Community Day & Bike Rodeo, organized by Montecito parents. Open to children, parents and teachers to learn about self-reliant travel and safety. The Bicycle Coalition will have a booth there. Free. 9:00 A.M.­1:00 P.M. Phone 969-9883 for details.
  • April 12, Start of EZE Bike Tour Across America, sponsored by Southern California Edison. This ceremony launches Joseph Mastroianni's electric bike trek. De la Guerra Plaza, 9:00 A.M. Phone 684-9757.
  • April 15, UCSB Bike Expo, organized by campus bicyclists, This event promises to raise awareness and promote safer, better conditions for thousands of daily campus users.
  • April 18, Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The Bicycle Coalition has had a booth at Earth Day since 1992 and each year gets better. Volunteer to help out as a bike mechanic or a staff-person at our information stand.
  • April 24, Gourmet Century. “The most civilized big bike ride in the country.” A six-course, 100-km feast with bicycling between the courses. Ride starts in Solvang with coffee, juice, cinnamon rolls and fruit; it ends with a rosemary grilled chicken dinner. Phone 688-6385.
  • April 24, Bicycle Ride Against Drinking Drivers, sponsored by the District Attorney's Victim Witness Program. This "demonstration ride" to the DoubleTree Resort will be followed by free refreshments, a safety rally, raffle prizes, and an optional 20-mile ride. Free T-shirts go to the first 250 registrants.   • April 25, Cycle for Cats, sponsored by the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP). This annual ride grows each year. Choose either a 12-mile or a 32-mile ride out of Goleta. Generous food, raffle prizes, games, magicians, tours of the County cat shelter, and more. Phone 569-1785.

May 1999

  • May 8, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. Three rides out of Chase Palm Park Extension in Santa Barbara, distances of 25K, 50K and 100K in length. Explore the South Coast by bike, then enjoy lunch and entertainment in the new Park. Pledge required. Phone 800-868-7888.
  • May 15, Bike Saturday, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and others.This brand new bike event kicks off our own “Bike Week.” Held at De la Guerra Plaza in Santa Barbara, it will consist of lots of fun bicycle-related things to do and watch from 8:00-11:00 A.M. Phone 564-5544.
  • May 18, Bike to Work ’99, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition and others. This is our big event of the year, with plans for events countywide for over 2000 bicyclists. Free T-shirts, food, prizes, and fun if you bike to work that day. Phone 688-9507.
  • May 21, Bike to School Day, organized by Santa Barbara Middle School. This outreach event targets three other middle schools plus all others who want to create their own event. Phone Brian Bargiel at 452-2707.
  • May 22, Chris King Trail Daze, sponsored by Chris King Cycle Group and the Los Padres National Forest. Join over 100 other bikers and other trail users in maintaining our trails. This spring, work will be done on the Camuesa Connector Trail. Free gifts and barbecue. For information or registration, phone 683-0950.

  • June 25-27, Bike Trek for Life and Breath, sponsored by the American Lung Association. Choose from a 3-day tour or a 1-day ride in the backroads of Santa Ynez Valley. Form a team of 5 or more for the 1-day June 26th ride. Great food, music, massage, and people. Pledge required. Phone 963-1426.

Starting from Los Alamos, choose rides of 64 or 100 miles that keep mostly to country roads Yes, you even pass real windmills Fee includes pasta dinner, pit stops, and sag support.   • August 28, Santa Barbara County Triathlon, sponsored by Balance Bar. Several options are available—you can swim, bike and run on either a long or short course, or you can team up with others and just bike the 34-mile course. All events are in Santa Barbara.   • September 11, Inauguration of the Dan Henry Bikeway, sponsored by Santa Barbara County. This event will honor Dan Henry, an 87-year old bicycling pioneer who lives in Solvang. The completed bikelanes between Los Olivos and Solvang will be officially opened. Bike to the event and meet officials and the press. Meet 11:00 A.M. at Grand Avenue and Olive Street in Los Olivos.   • October 3, Joe Ryan Memorial Bike Ride, sponsored by the Lompoc Elks Lodge Aid to Handicapped Children’s Fund. Three rides are available out of Lompoc, ranging from 25 to 50 miles long. Registration includes sag stops and BBQ lunch at the finish line. Optional breakfast is extra. Phone 736-1835.

  • October 9, Twin Peaks Mountain Bike Ride, sponsored by the Solvang-Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People's Advocates for Domestic and Child Abuse Prevention Program. Beginning at Los Olivos Park, choose from a 41-mile ride up Figueroa Mountain with 4100 feet of climbing & great downhills, or a leisurely 22-mile ride through Happy Canyon.   • October 9, Santa Barbara Bike Tour & Fest for MS, sponsored by the Channel Island Chapter of the MS Society. Starting in Santa Barbara, there are three bike courses of different lengths—15, 31, and 62 miles. Includes breakfast, lunch, rest stops, aerobics, mechanical help, music and massage. Pledge required.

  • October 23, People Powered Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is the 20th annual ride, with 30-, 62- and 100-mile rides in the Santa Ynez Valley. Rides begin and end in Los Olivos. Great food all along the way, fine support, and a barbecue at the end. Join cyclists on this local ride.
