A whole month of exciting 2010 bike
events is coming our way. It's called CycleMAYnia.
Last November 18, over 100 cyclists showed at Santa Barbara's
Bici Centro community bike shop to kick off planning for a whole month of biking
activities in May 2010. The name voted on by bicyclists from 300 entries
was "Cycle MAYnia," later changed to "CycleMAYnia."
CycleMAYnia is a partnership of the Santa Barbara Bicycle
Coalition, Traffic Solutions and Bici Centro. It was formed to creatively challenge
the community at large, and offer financial and administrative assistance to
individuals and groups to create bike-related events that will engage all
people on bicycles—and those thinking about it.

As events are established, they will be listed here:
- May 6. Bike Moves.
Join Santa Barbara's First Thursday events with an easygoing ride that obeys
traffic laws. Meet at the WheelHouse at 7:30 PM, 528 Anacapa Street, Santa
Barbara. Read about it here.
- May 10. Youth Bike Films. A selection of bicycle
films is being shown at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, 2559
Puesta del Sol, Santa Barbara. Details forthcoming.
- May 15. Bike Expo, sponsored by
our Bicycle Coalition. A day of activities at Plaza del Mar in Santa Barbara.
Details forthcoming.
- May 16. Classic Bike Ride, sponsored
by our Bicycle Coalition. South Coast ride. Details forthcoming.
- May 17-24. Bike Flags on State Street.
Watch for our 125 bicycle flags waving to us in Downtown Santa Barbara.
- May 18. Bike to School Day. Events
are being arranged at individual South Coast schools. Contact South Coast
coordinator Kim Stanley-Zimmerman at ksz@linkline.com.
- May 19. Santa Barbara Bike to Work Day. This
annual event is 7:00-9:00 AM. Bicycle there for free food, drinks, prizes
at State and De la Guerra. Contact Sarah
Grant for details.
- May 20-22. Street Skills for Cyclists
Class. Learn how to increase your confidence and cope better
with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid
mishaps, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross
freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including on-road bicycling
on Saturday. The class is being held at the Granada Garage Bikestation,
1219 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara. Online info and registration are here.
Event support. There are a number of "mini
grants" being
offered to event planners, ranging from $50-$500 through a competitive
process administered by the CycleMAYnia committee. Applications were
due by March 5, and announcements will be made by March 12, 2010.
